Proven techniques for reducing and eliminating EMI/RFI problems.

  • Has your plant suffered scrams for which no equipment failures can be detected?
  • Do your operators have a list of circuits which alarm occasionally for no reason at all?
  • Have you had difficulty getting new or improved systems to operate reliably when the plant is at power?
  • Does the term "noisy ground" appear in some of your electrical equipment root cause reports?
WHAT IS EMI?

Virtually everyone has experienced the typical EMI--lightning strikes, power line interferences, or spiking from motors and relays. Other more common EMI may not be as apparent because older equipment was not sensitive to EMI; thus when new electronic systems or equipment are installed, EMI is not anticipated.
EMI always involves both a victim and an aggressor. A victim circuit may sit for months or years waiting for an aggressor circuit to degrade before plant operation is affected or an aggressor may be waiting for a victim. Anticipating EMI during routine design and maintenance activities can continuously increase a plant’s resistance to the EMI problem. CHAR Services’ training courses are designed to put your plant personnel in control of this often misunderstood, yet very real, problem.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Our training program provides customized training for every level of student, ranging from Electricians and I&C Technicians to System and Design Engineers.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Richard Meininger, President of CHAR Services, has been directly involved in the area of EMI since 1964, pioneering the electromagnetic pulse testing and participating in the early development of time domain reflectometry. He directed the evaluation of the effects of the TMI-2 accident on the instrument and electrical systems; authored a "Handbook for Electromagnetic Compatibility of Digital Equipment in Power Plants" for EPRI; and prepared a "Design Standard for Electromagnetic Compatibility in a Power
Plant".
