Electrical Condition Monitoring & Noise Control

Home CHAR SYSTEM RTDR
High frequency electrical noise (Traveling Waves) couples into EMI susceptible equipment becoming part of the signal. Knowing this, CHAR Services has developed a proprietary testing technique that uses time delays to determine where the EMI couples into a system. This testing technique is performed on the cables, typically inside the control room rack. CHAR Services refers to this technique as the Reverse Time Domain Reflectometer (RTDR).

RTDR THEORY
The RTDR works like a TDR for locating coupling locations.

Profile

  • A pulse is coupled to the shield.
  • The pulse travels along shield coupling at discontinuities.
  • The signal return is measured to determine coupling points.

Support
The RTDR sees the system under test just like plant noise.
  • RTDR Pulse level approximates plant noise.
  • Coupling paths are identical as used by plant noise.
